Often, the goal for post-prostatectomy physical therapy has focused on strengthening the pelvic-floor muscles. However, not all men will experience the same thing when it comes to pelvic floor weakness post-prostatectomy. Some experience overactive, or tight muscles, while for others, they become underactive. It is therefore very important for a patient to get an individualized physical therapy evaluation, rather than automatically prescribing strengthening “Kegel” exercises.
Many men who experience incontinence actually have over-active pelvic muscles – in which case, additional strengthening exercises right away can cause the muscles to become tighter and as a result, weaker. Individualized care can significantly reduce both pelvic pain and
incontinence.*
